We will be introducing a new award at
our annual band banquet for the most outstanding band
front member.
The award will be called the Caroline and Hank Keller
Memorial Band Front Award in honor of Mrs. Caroline
Keller and her son Hank Keller. Both Caroline and Hank
made a tremendous contribution to the music program here
at Pennsbury. Caroline Keller was the next to last
Pennsbury Music Supervisor who hired many talented
faculty. It was a direct result of Mrs. Keller’s
leadership that the Pennsbury Music Department is what
it is today.
The following criteria will be used to determine the
award winner:
Must be a member of the Pennsbury High School Marching
Band in good standing for the entire year.
Must be an outstanding member of the Pennsbury Marching
Band Color Guard.
The award will be presented to an individual who has
demonstrated tremendous leadership, complete
unselfishness, and personifies the tradition of the
Pennsbury Marching Band Color Guard.

All awards are based on a number of
criteria including but not limited to:
1. Attendance at rehearsals and performances.

3. Successfully learning music and routines to the best
of a student’s ability.
4. Successful completion of the annual concert
band/lesson requirement.
5. Obviously abiding by all of the rules of this

Historical notes on the Marching Band’s
Abrams Award
At the banquet
on the first Sunday in June, the Shulamith Simon
Abrams Award will be given to a member of the
Pennsbury Marching Band for 2006-2007. It will be the
twenty-eighth time the award has been given since it was
first instituted in 1979 to honor an outstanding member
of the band who has demonstrated "good citizenship,
perseverance, and dedication," among other positive
qualities.
The person who receives
the honor will have his or her name added to the list on
a plaque in the display case of music program awards
outside the auditorium at Pennsbury High School.
The first name on the
plaque is that of George McBlane, a man who should be
about 47 just about now.
The origin of the award
goes back to the beginnings of the Pennsbury Band
Booster organization itself. In 1970, nine years before
the first award was given, Jack and Shulamith Abrams
founded the Pennsbury Band Boosters, the volunteer
parent association that has provided immeasurable
support to the music program across a broad front over
the decades since.
Mrs. Abrams died in the
spring of 1978. A year later, the award was instituted
in her memory as a way to acknowledge a member of the
band whose qualities were an echo of her own. Jack
Abrams presented the plaque and a $100 savings bond to
McBlane. |
